Guidance Counselor

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A valid Arizona State Guidance Counselor Certificate.
  2. Master’s Degree in Guidance Counseling.
  3. Bilingual English and Navajo speaker preferred.
  4. Valid Arizona State Fiingerprint Clearance Card.
  5. Two years of successful experience working with Elementary School aged children and parents.
  6. Counseling experience required.
  7. Must be computer literate.
  8. Fifteen (15) hours of State approved Structured English Immersion (SEI) coursework.
  9. Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.

JOB GOAL

 

To provide counseling services at an elementary school that promote student success through prevention and intervention services that respond to significant difficulties that impact student learning and specifically focus on the personal, social, and emotional development of the student. 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Works collaboratively with school counseling staff to provide a system of support for students that are experiencing difficulty.
  1. Works collaboratively with parents, staff, and other school counselors.
  1. Monitors students due to low academic performance, attendance and/or other issues, and develops individual intervention services that promote the positive social and emotional well-being of the student that leads to academic success.
  1. Maintains records concerning student services and insures the confidentiality of the student.
  1. Assists students in developing problem solving and coping skills related to home and school.
  1. Counsels students experiencing emotional and behavior problems at school, and when necessary, makes appropriate referrals for testing, guidance, clinical, or suspected abuses.
  1. Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention oriented group activities to address student needs.
  1. Provides individual and group counseling to students with social, emotional and/or substance abuse concerns and needs.
  1. Provides information to educate students, staff, and parents/guardians about medical and social results of substance abuse and prevention programs.
  1. Collaborates effectively with parents, guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational and community agencies regarding students with identified needs and concerns.
  1. Works as a liaison between community groups (Indian Health Services, site council, etc.), and the District to create support and awareness of student needs.
  1. Works with local community agencies, social services, police department, and juvenile officers in regard to student needs.
  1. Works with community and government agencies on problems related to abuse, truancy, and counseling referrals (Indian Health Services, Social Services, etc.) and the District to create support and awareness.
  1. Works with teaching staff, parents, support personnel, and students on matters of discipline and welfare.
  1. Follows-up with students at-risk of failing due to low performance, attendance, or other problems.
  1. Provides information to educate students about medical and social results of substance abuse and prevention programs.
  1. Resolves disciplinary problems in a fair and just manner and maintains records of any disciplinary action taken, including bus conduct reports.
  1. Assists in screening procedures for students requiring special services.
  1. Assumes general responsibilities for student activities, program, orientation, assemblies, and similar activities.
  1. Conducts an annual evaluation to review the extent of the program implementation and progress, and shares the results as appropriate.
  1. Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession.
  1. Schedules classes in GENESIS.
  1. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

 

Ten (10) months a year.  Flex schedules will be arranged to supervisor’s recommendation and contract dates.  The Governing Board will establish salary and work year.
