Reading Specialist

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Valid Arizona State Teaching Certificate for the Elementary (K-8) level, or Secondary English with a Reading endorsement.
  2. Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary or Secondary education.
  3. Five years of successful teaching experience at the Elementary (K-8) or Secondary English level.
  4. Experience in teaching Reading required.
  5. Structured English Immersion (SEI) endorsement.

JOB GOAL

 

To provide Reading instruction to K-12 students that will prepare students for the reading and writing portions of the Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) assessment and to provide support to teachers, administrators, Instructional Coaches, school staff, and parents and/or guardians that will enhance effective research based literacy instruction.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Designs and plans instruction that develops the student’s abilities to meet Arizona’s academic standards and the District’s assessment plan.
  2. Uses data to identify students, in conjunction with the school principal, for the reading class based on AIMS, NWEA, DIBELS/DIBELS Next, SAT 10, classroom Assessment scores, and referrals from classroom teachers.
  3. Analyzes student reading assessments (AIMS, SAT 10, NAEP, NWEA, DIBELS/DIBELS Next) and develops a reading instruction program to assist students in specific skill development.
  4. Administers individual standardized tests and other tests in accordance with State law and District policy for assessment and on-going evaluation, and maintains all student progress records.
  5. Screens all students, as required or beneficial to the student and the program, and refers to District specialists for diagnosis of students suspected of having disabilities.
  6. Creates and maintains a learning climate that supports the development of student’s abilities to meet Arizona’s academic standards.
  7. Creates a motivated classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of students.
  8. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom, within the building, and on play areas.
  9. Implements and manages instruction that develops the abilities of students to meet Arizona academic standards.
  10. Teaches to relevant reading objectives as guided by the Arizona State Reading Standards.
  11. Guides the learning process towards the achievement on the AIMS assessment, curriculum goals, and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
  12. Works with building grade levels and subject area committees to insure thoroughness and efficiency in meeting the reading level learning objectives.
  13. Assesses learning and communicates results to students, parents, and other professionals with respect to the abilities of the student to meet Arizona academic standards.
  14. Communicates with and provides feedback to parents and Core classroom teachers on a regular basis concerning student progress and concerns through conferences, reports, and other means.
  15. Collaborates with colleagues and parents to design, implement, and support learning programs that develop the abilities of students to meet Arizona academic standards and to transition from school to work or post-secondary education.
  16. Keeps the principal and other appropriate staff members informed as to matters affecting students under their supervision, school policy, and the educational program.
  17. Provides training, support, and ideas to regular classroom staff about reading instruction and the needs of students.
  18. Applies knowledge and increases the literacy skills of students in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing.
  19. Demonstrates current professional knowledge to effectively design and plan instruction, implements and manages instruction, creates and maintains an appropriate learning environment and assesses student progress.
  20. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and correlates these with classroom, building, and District objectives.
  21. Maintains professional competence through educational in-service activities provided by the District and or/self selected professional growth activities.
  22. Recognizes the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  23. Takes all necessary reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities while on duty and reports the vandalism and theft of school property as situations occur.
  24. Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with District guidelines.
  25. Supervises students during emergency drills, assemblies, play areas, field trips, and other times as needed or requested.
  26. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct.
  27. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

 

Nine and one-half (9.5) months a year.
